Argues that big data platforms are not a silver bullet unless organizations can understand and integrate their data effectively. After acknowledging typical benefits (scalability, performance, potentially lower TCO), the article proposes Semantic Web technologies as a low-cost integration alternative to traditional tooling. It highlights open standards like RDF and OWL (and related tooling) to represent data in a flexible graph form, enabling integration across heterogeneous sources. The underlying idea is that semantics and shared meaning are the real integration bottleneck; standards-based semantic technologies can reduce vendor cost while improving interoperability and evolvability.
